UNTOUCHED FOREST

Monitoring untouched forest

The state pays the owner once for the trees that will never be cut. That requires a count of every tree before the forest is set aside. After that, the forest must show that protection works. A tree-level inventory that can be repeated from new imagery does both jobs.

CLOSE-TO-NATURE FORESTRY

Managing close-to-nature forestry

In close-to-nature forestry the forest manager returns to each stand every few years to decide which trees to cut. This continues for decades. With a current inventory and a draft plan for each round, the manager does not start from nothing each time.

CERTIFICATES

Documenting for FSC, PEFC and EUDR

Auditors check a certified forest every year against the same documents: the management plan, the inventory, the biodiversity areas, and the harvest records. When the normal workflow keeps these documents current, the owner does not pay a consultant to prepare them before each audit.

EU forest protection and wood demand

MORE FOREST UNDER STRICT PROTECTION
  • 10% of EU land by 2030
    The EU strategy targets strict protection of 10% of its land, including all remaining primary and old-growth forests.
  • More existing forest protected
    Reaching the target requires additional protected areas. Forest designations can bring existing woodland under strict protection, rather than create new forest.
  • Less land available for harvesting
    When managed forest enters strict protection, commercial harvesting stops. The EU target covers all land types, so it does not specify how many forest hectares will leave production.
WOOD DEMAND AND SOURCING
  • +37% global demand by 2050
    FAO projects global consumption of primary processed wood products to grow 37% from 2020 to 2050. This is global context.
  • EUDR changes which wood buyers can source
    The EU Deforestation Regulation requires covered wood products to be legal and deforestation-free, with origin traceability and due diligence. Buyers need evidence that harvesting has not caused forest degradation.
  • Demand for documented wood
    These requirements favour suppliers who can demonstrate compliance. They can shift sourcing towards documented wood, without necessarily increasing total wood consumption.

Forest owners need reliable origin and harvest records to support buyers’ checks.

  • A certified forest must keep a management plan, an inventory, mapped biodiversity areas, and harvest records. maiar.forest produces them as part of the normal workflow.
  • Today the owner pays for this in consultant hours before each audit. With the records kept current, the documentation is already there when the audit comes.
FOR THE AUDITOR
  • Every record carries a date, a source, and its history, so the plan can be checked against evidence.
  • The yearly surveillance audit and the five-year recertification read the same records.
